Our aims

BHASSEXPLORE is a cooperative, a collective, a foundation, with the sole purpose of removing as much plastic and man made debris and junk from, what should be, the pristine and absolutely amazing, iconic and stunning coastal habitat that is the Beachy Head and Seven Sisters chalk cliffs landscape......

From Cuckmere Haven through to Holywell, adjacent to the town of Eastbourne in East Sussex, this virtually wild and untamed stretch (about 5.5 miles) of coast is a jewel of a place and an important habitat with an incredible history and story to tell...

Both geologically and historically it is a fascinating place and many coastal species exist in its myriad of micro niche environments...

BHASSEXPLORE is a recently formed operation charged solely with entering this unique biosphere and removing as much of the plastics and synthetics that have accumulated in all the nooks and crannies that proliferate this rugged yet so beautiful landscape...

Over the past fifty years or more, extreme amounts of all kinds of plastic flotsam and jetsom have found their way into the jagged rock pools and onto remote coves, pushed there by the relentless tides and frequent storms and deposited in the most remote and inaccessible crevices and up against the majestic chalk and flint cliff bases...

BHASSEXPLORE mission is to locate, document and remove as much of this detritus as is humanly possible from this incredible marine and geological masterpiece of an environment...

BHASSEXPLORE'S task is made all the harder by the relative inaccessibility and somewhat dangerously rugged and twice daily tidal challenges presented by a continuously changing and constantly eroding landscape and towering cliffs which dominate the entire region...

BHASSEXPLORE is, and has to be fully aware of all the dangers and difficulties this unique terrain presents...

BHASSEXPLORE can not emphasise enough that much care and every precaution has to be taken in any undertaking or endeavour attempted in this most natural of settings... BHASSEXPLORE can only strongly emphasise and rigorously enforce the practises that must be observed in this challenging environment,

TIDES AND WEATHER CONDITIONS can appear benign but at their most gentle, can present many dangers, which will be amplified many fold at times on this stretch of coast and can change abruptly catching people unawares and placing them in extreme danger...

BHASSEXPLORE is compelled to inform you that up to 90% of the terrain underfoot is either ankle turning uneven, fall inducing unstable, slippery and skin ripping, bone breaking, concussion producing hard core rugged or any combination of the above....injuries can and will occur at any moment on a scale from bleeding shins, right through to death...

BHASSEXPLORE must point out that these dangers ebb and flow with the tides as a multitude of different rock and pebble underfoot conditions become exposed....or disappear. Coupled with windy, wet or stormy weather even the most experienced adventurer and explorer will face difficulties and become imperiled by the slightest lapse in observance and concentration to the immediate and short term future conditions...

BHASSEXPLORE can only implore anyone entering this coastal region to wear stout, grippy footwear. PAY FULL ATTENTION TO HIGH TIDE TIMES AND RANGE AND THE WEATHER FORECASTS,  what starts out as a benign stroll on a beautiful day at lowish tide in plimsoles in a mesmerising and energizing, compelling and totally absorbing landscape so full of beauty and fascination can easily become a battle for survival against  injuries, weather and tide, cliff falls and fatigue...

BHASSEXPLORE can not emphasise enough all the considerations anybody entering this region should take, even on the most calm and pleasant summers day...

BHASSEXPLORE realises that these, and many more factors are part of the appeal to explore and learn from such an environment, an opportunity to truly leave the madness of the 21st century behind, no phone signal, no roads, no buildings, save the lighthouse, just a millions of years old landscape, exposed by coastal erosion for all to see...

BHASSEXPLORE also recognises that all these elements combine to make it a magnet for plastic waste of all varieties. Plastics and foams and styrenes from every boat and ship, from every stream and river, from every beach along the south coast and the English Channel ends up here, trapped and ensnared in the coves and on the rocks, deposited by super high tides and storms and trapped against the ever more frequent cliff falls, some of this manmade pollutant, one that we are all involved in to some extent or another, along with tonnes of fishing industries equipment, is up to fifty years old and slowly breaking down into smaller and smaller parts into what should be a pristine environment...

It is BHASSEXPLORE'S mission to remove as much of this shameful plastic from this stretch of coast and we ask you for any contribution no matter how big or small to help us remove this blot on an iconic landscape and prevent it from building up to these levels again...
